Concerns For Stained Glass

The Earth moves. How are we still not used to this? After all this time living on the planet we struggle to cope with this fact. In San Diego, I felt the outer ripples of a 7.2 earthquake that started in Mexicali. The movement was in long waves and though everything in the house was shaken, I was not. My brain understood what was happening and because the nature of the movement was not violent- jarring, I should say, there was no need to panic. I figured this event was halfway common when one is out near fault-lines. Was I too ignorant? The people who were around for the Northridge quake were on a higher alert. But to me that is ignorance. They should have been able to feel the difference in earth movements and know instantly that it was 'safe.' The only cause for concern was the length of time it went on. More would break the longer it went. Even then, quakes are short lived. By nature. I could compare the feel to waiting for the F or JMZ trains where the platforms are high ab...

Easter

For Easter I wanted to find myself at least neck deep in stations of the cross re-enactments, cross wielding processions and actual crucifixions. Fat chance! Travel plans took me out of Mexico and plopped me back in the US. In La Jolla of all places! So it was a Sunday sunset with seals by the sea. There was almost nonstop heavy road reconstruction going on in between Rosarito and TJ. It seemed like not matter what hour you went through there was a dust cloud and slower moving traffic. During one of those noonish hour we happened to drive through on the way to TJ and the car full of Crosthwaites and me noticed and remarked enthusiastically on one of the hard hat wearing workers who had added the protection of a wide cardboard brim to his head gear. From a distance it looked like  safety helmet sombrero! Posted via email from Sacapuntas tm

i just kept my gringa mouth shut

La Casa De la Nueve was a final stop for that evening for a cup of something. Nothing really interesting was happening musically. A child band was doing covers (impersonations) of Green Day. Afterward, 'mommy' and 'daddy' roadied for them. There were shady, but not dangerous regulars hanging around too. A kid walked in the door and slapped a fair size bag of what looked like weed on the table in front of one of them. The art exhibit- photography wasn't great... It was an odd moment to be there. Before it got too late we hustled through the streets to  the taxi stand. A minivan will wait there until it is completely full before taking off. It's halfway between a bus and a taxi. You get to sit in close with total strangers. And no chickens. This time. See and download the full gallery on posterous Posted via email from Sacapuntas tm

Lluvia

The night before we left Mexico the sky opened up and it poured. I was excited about even half way experiencing actual weather in that part of the world. I wanted so much to go outside and see the mud run and the usually shabby looking excuses for bright coloration finally pop to life. But by the time I got out and about, the sun and earth scrambled to grab and hide away as much of the rain water as either of them could. The green plants and the flowers couldn't help smiling a little bigger in their floristic way even though I suspect they were told not to. Out on the the roads just about everything looked dry in the sunshine until our route towards the border crossing, which is normally just roads, had become a canal! We were driving in a foot and half  (or so) of water! And when it would have seemed obvious to say  the Mexican Spanish term for LOOK OUT! there was silence. The colloquialism is AGUAS! (which means waters, by the way). Pun. Ahem. That wasn't the only excitement...
