La Rumorosa

Before I came down with a cold for my birthday, I took a day trip- no, this was  definitely a road trip- out to Mexicali. Why? I hadn't been there! And I had a chance to go. Simple enough.  What I knew about this city was hearsay: the only thing you can do in Mexicali is be hot, drink beer to not be so hot, but end up just being drunk and hot. And eat famously good Chinese food. Stopping at a Starbucks in the city to use the toilet and the wifi,  (my dudes, that is all Starbucks actually exist for in this dimention)  I did notice a distinct spike in the number Chinese/Chinese-Mexican people in the coffee shop. There had better be amazing Chinese food around here then, right? And did I even try any comida china? HA! Of course not! Why, would I EVER do that?!  I opted for a vegan place . (It was Asian fusion food, ok?!) The atmosphere was a little weird because they were in the middle of moving locations, but the food w...

test results are in - one in a million, kid

Ask me what I did in 2017.  I can tell you that I got a big raise. I can say I was on international TV. I  took trips to New Orleans and Montreal, Canada. I spent some time in L.A.  I performed on stages. I made stop motion videos shown in an art gallery...  I can also say that my body was artistic all on it's own. It   grew a tumor. This thing appeared overnight in February. It itched occasionally. It was something I could actually feel change inside my skin. For a little while I even thought it might be a parasite.  Since It was located on my chest I, naturally, went to have it checked out at a 'boob clinic.'  The woman who 'saw' me went on to make backhanded insinuations that I was overreacting. I guess, to her,  I was just behaving like so many hysterical women who come running into the clinic and waste time fussing with every little thing. Because they read too much on the Internet.  Yeah. This super...

GoooooooooL

{pan ducle en OXXO. for no reason.} GoooooooooL for today:  (because I still have a really hard time doing this.) to write something in my blog AND PUBLISH IT .  ..ublish it. bulshi it. Aaand there we have it! Bullshit!  (You see? Do you see how my brain can work sometimes?) Awesome-sauce'em. Now, be warned. This rambling came out in Spanish and English.  I don't know where I was going with it, but I started talking about displacement and tumbled into  Heroic Procession   and some of what all that is about. The links go to a video- if you want to one incarnation of it. I am diaspora from a non exi...

We are the spooks in the night

Marzipan & beer, live snails & you are from WHERE?

Sunday I went to a Martinez etc, etc, family reunion. This would be The Human's mother's side of the family. Turns out if was much more than a reunion is was a triple  birthday party and a meeting of people that completely warped my brain. Let me share the brain warp. You ready? My Human has family WHO LIVED IN WEBSTER MASSACHUSETTS and  are still in the area. One of them even went to BARTLETT! HWTF! Here we all at in Tijuana relating about Nelson Street by the ball field and what they did to Cranston Print. HFTW?! And then it was explained that, for some reason (those pesky Norns), Webster ended up being the midway point between the south of Norway and Obregon (Mexico); were an aunt met and a Norwegian man, with whom she eventually married. He proposed to her on the bridge spanning the French River at the Webster-Dudley border. I am not making this stuff up! I met them, and they all told the same story.. The world didn't get smaller. It got weirder. Because for ...

5th year anniversary.

Champiñones con ajo Our plan for Sunday was a giddy success. Because Cafe De La Flor still has the best mushroom dish in all of anywhere around (and that Italian panini thing isn't so bad either), we shrugged off the brunching yuppie families and fresas to have our menu favorites at the cafe before walking over to "Jabba's Palace"- more commonly known as Plaza Rio; an even bigger hive of yuppies and fresas. This was where we got our skate on. I thought I had not been on roller skates in a while but when Human figured he hadn't been skating in a Christ's lifetime , my crazy idea seemed even more perfect. The Oh-Zone was writhing with children. The music was blasting. It was all so familiar to experiences in my youth. Giggling behind my knees.   I was going to chicken out of getting skates and ask for blades instead, but the man behind the shoe counter plunked down a hideous octet of wheels before I could say anything. Choic...

Then Smaug is Draco's Evil Uncle?

The dragon did not have his day.. and I am ever wondering why they did not read the book. It was a SHORT one. The decision to see the second part of the Hobbit (guh) trilogy was random. I was out with My Human on a little adventure to see dance and theatre at CEART  in Tijuana. When we had had enough of salsa, we walked back to the taxis and stopped in at the shopping mall. We were just in time to see the 3D subtitled version of the Desolation of Smaug (The desolation happened in the last movie. WTQ, people). We followed our whim an bought tickets - less than $10 for 2 tickets for a 3D movie. (You 1st Worlders can all be jealous now!) I was not impressed the with 3D.  I was not impressed with many of the changes that the film team chose. They appeared nervous about straying away from the book. They can't even make up new dialogue so many, many of the scenes were awkward / stiff for no reason. To me, they have rehashed Tolkien's stuff ad nauseam that I am becoming convin...

That it happened at all = a success.

To all the gaming/ comic book/ sci-fi/ fantasy/ cartoon/ graphic novel/ anime/ BRONY(!)/ conventions with corporate sponsors, 'famous people' appearances, press agencies, advertising campaigns and spending budgets well over the few pesos that these young people have- I say-   SUCK IT. The success of this little convention was that it happened at all: not the tally of thousands that passed through or how much money it made back. this event was like a fair at school, but the kids, for kids they were, had taken over an almost abandoned mall to, because they are brought up as humble Mexicans, respectfully run amok. There were attempts at costumes, but you could see that these kids were lucky to have a pink wig to don or a deck of cards to play and trade with.  They served bento lunches in a Tijuana sort of way and the music was alright, as I recall. (Except deafening. Thank the gods for ear plugs! Borrowed as they were. Ick.)

The Tijuana without tourists.

A Black Puppy and the Governor Himself

A black lab mix puppy was found yelping and whining outside the window a few days ago. It was brought in and put in the laundry hamper for safekeeping until she could be cleaned and groomed. 100 ticks and fleas on a puppy not pleased...  After an intensive cleaning  and a night of more crying, she tried to bond with me as I hoped around her in the kitchen making lunch.. it was rather fun to play with the baby creature as I had never had the experience, but I did not become attached. I could not. There are already two dogs here (plus the love interest chihuahua next door) so she was taken to a shelter here in town that will hopefully find a good home for her. Then there was the random studio visit from a woman who wants us to visit Mexicali. She invited us to an open in Tijuana that promises to have some butoh. I am interested in seeing this- good or bad. Last night I stayed up too late watching the excitement in Boston and the footage from Tex...

Fuimos caminando

The gorgeous weather couldn't last (as I knew it wouldn't) so  today  t he weather is crappy and my planned trip across the boarder has been delayed. I have been waiting  two weeks or so for this jaunt; apparently, looks like it will have to wait even longer- til Monday... Hum. In the meanwhile, let me tell you about Chapultepec. Fuimos caminando en las Lomas de Chapultepec y es mejor caminar allí que en las Lomas de Beverly. Esta es mi opinion, por su puesto. On two different occasions, my Human and I have been able to celebrate  a few days of some early Spring/Summer weather by taking hardcore strolls through the  more ritzy parts of Tijuana. This particular area of the city was where all the gangster related violence was happening a few years ago. But that isn't why the strolls are hardcore. Now, there is a quiet in the hills, fresh air, pizza bike deliveries, construction crews remodeling homes and folks in veh...
