The Hottest Thing In Mexico City

What is the hottest thing in Mexico City anyway, huh? Well, you will disagree with me instantly I'm sure, but I am going to go out on a weird wire and say that power lines top my list for hot things in DF. They are... art. Full stop. Looking up at all the copious cables in orderly albeit often disconcerting lines only to then have your eye land hard and disbelieving on wrapped, looped, tangled masses... It does something for me in a way that is impossible to explain. It is terribly engaging, in an awfully absurd way. I wonder if the 'grid guys' have the same feelings... Certainly they can't just hate it, right? Otherwise they would be running wires in a different way, right?  What ever the logic or illogic involved, I bless them for their particular contribution to the aesthetic of the city.  I joked that I would eventually make a calendar of the sexiest power lines. Would anyone want this? Or am I the only human with such unusual tastes- and humor?

New York, Yup It's Still Home

Battery Park I walked around Manhattan during September. It's true. It happened. I was there. Never made above midtown. I did go the the Hudson Yards a lot though.  Because the Armory Show was being held there.  Armory Show booth installation That's an immigrant coal miner's name on the wall It also happened to be NY Fashion Week. That meant I all at once found myself as close as 50 feet away from Very Famous People (trade mark) I chuckled at the palpable glow of their fame and wealth. I barked a laugh as I could actually recognize one of them glittering blondely in the light rain. The distance between me there unkempt and outfitted in clothing bought at the US | Mexico border and these million dollar Very Famous People (trade mark) was purely comical. What else could I do but laugh? I am a witness to ridiculous times.  Proenza Schouler fashion show rehearsal on Little Island No context shot from Proenza Schouler fashion show rehearsal on Little Island Walking the st...

I Wore My Own Scars For Halloween

Who got theyself out to Nuebo Yorq last month? Was it meee?! It was unusually rough in the time leading up to this trip to New York though. There was certainly some energy against us at the beginning. I felt absolutely miserable about going. For no identifiable reason. Hugo was overly anxious about his show, and just before our departure, sure enough, our bad feelings about everything manifested. But once we were on the ground and jumping into the work that thing- that force wanned into the background, it's teeth blunted. Hopefully, it got what it all that it wanted... A small sacrifice to the What-Evers for something much better? There are already signs of better things to come. Hugo was offered another shot at showing in Miami. That means in a few short weeks we will be back on the east coast looking out indifferently at more palm trees. Oh, and installing a mural framed video projection. There might also be some, you know, huge art fairs happening too. Staying ...

Productivity, thy name is... Espresso

It happened! Before I got all my stitches removed, I hauled my butt over to- even more warm weather, sunshine, palm trees, ocean, and Spanish.  I took my DFSP adventure time all the way to Miami, Fla.  We time traveled twice over: moving three hours ahead plus an hour for daylight savings time.  So during that first week, I was simply feeling magical ! -as said with a great amount of sarcasm. I didn't know how quickly I would feel ready for doing anything. Before this trip, I was barely recovered of the vampiric drain on my life force from two weeks of- oh hey, I have an open hole in my chest!  (None of you are ready to see those pictures.)  It took so long to get closed up because I don't live close to decent labs. They needed time to ship samples out and run detailed tests. And I had to get cut twice. In the first procedure they made a 6x7cm hole.  In the second procedure they took out everything down to the muscle. Just to be certa...

test results are in - one in a million, kid

Ask me what I did in 2017.  I can tell you that I got a big raise. I can say I was on international TV. I  took trips to New Orleans and Montreal, Canada. I spent some time in L.A.  I performed on stages. I made stop motion videos shown in an art gallery...  I can also say that my body was artistic all on it's own. It   grew a tumor. This thing appeared overnight in February. It itched occasionally. It was something I could actually feel change inside my skin. For a little while I even thought it might be a parasite.  Since It was located on my chest I, naturally, went to have it checked out at a 'boob clinic.'  The woman who 'saw' me went on to make backhanded insinuations that I was overreacting. I guess, to her,  I was just behaving like so many hysterical women who come running into the clinic and waste time fussing with every little thing. Because they read too much on the Internet.  Yeah. This super...

New Orleans: Working & Vacationing-ish

{outside of Tipitina's there was this communal work of art: a staple and flyer encrusted telephone pole} I am still processing what I experienced in New Orleans. And I'm jet / time change - lagged. So I'm not really processing. I'm just tired and coffee compensation is giving me a headache. Maybe I am trying not to get a cold. Hugo and I were in New Orleans for one week (only one week!) and it was the best trip we could have hoped for: the city was celebrating Halloween, the weather was like New England summer time, food and drink were deliciously bountiful, rest was attainable, music was everywhere, and yes one could get their work done. I am so thankful that the Mexican consulate was able to arrange for us to stay at the Joan Mitchel Center . This is a note for artists especially: Check this place out! If you find a way to utilized this space, do so! It is a piece of artist heaven in the middle of Treme. My mouth was hanging open just a bit when we shown a...

Art in Madrid - Museums & Galleries

Since I have lost a lot of sleep this week (for no good reason) and am feeling completely useless, I think I should do another random travel blog entry. If there are errors it is because I cannot focus either my brain or my eyes. It is a given. You go to almost anywhere in a European city you will be hit over the head with art. And as an apparently art starved American I can't help but notice I am being smashed with the sight of beautiful things made by hands and by cunning and.. by magic.. (Thanks Tolkien for slipping in there.) { lighting  array - best installation art ever? } I loved the Thyssen . As a person it felt good to be in there and I think if I were a painting I would be ecstatic to hang on those walls. It felt like there was a lot of love for art in that place. And the walls were painted in peach tones! This, to me, was awesome. The whole place was a peach- with art!  Coming from the land of white boxes, white rooms, white galleries the colour really sai...

Three Ring Town

Summer has brought a carnival and three circuses- circi to Rosarito. It has also brought in a time of near complete mental vacation mode for My Human and myself. After making a social appearance at the  art|baja tijuana  -Casa GS, and being crammed in with a swarm of SoCal art people (the beautiful people), becoming a lurker around  comicon    has risen to high priority on our  get stuff done  list. Lurking, as you should know, does not in any way mean entering into that zoo with an i.d. badge (ear-tag for the herd) so please do not ask me to obtain autographs or ask which new movie trailers we saw- or what the latest themed outfit for your dogs are this season. They seem to have enough zombie-like followers to keep this ziggurat afloat. Go ask one of them. What? Too many mixed metaphors and pop/historical references? Deal with it. I am not giving money to that monstrous corporate fest- ahem, why would PETCO have a booth at a COMIC CONVENTION? ...

OCMA god

OCMA {2}

Could a white wall be more interesting than rich people I don't know and art that will not be fading away in 30 mins? Why, yes. A glass of champagne for all. You see here a me shaped shadow. I got  total bitch vibe from this photographer. We exchanged glances once and  a lot of negative information fell out of that look like intestines into toilet. I  felt like she went out of her way to avoid taking any pictures with me in them. Somebody please tell me she is the sweetest person in the world and I got it all wrong. Art and people mingled here.  I am thankful for alcohol sometimes. It gave me the lack of nerves to shoot this stuff right in front of so many judgemental artist types.

Operation New Roof Begins

I just barely recovered from the miseries of a sleep deprived weekend when the roofers showed up at 7:00am this morning to throw material and tools and themselves on the thin barrier between me and daylight. I am not offering them coffee, I was going to, but by the sound of the rooster crowing up there I don't think they need it. Even with all the caffeine for myself, I am, once more, a cantankerous curmudgeon that no amount of coffee can recondition. I thought I left that version of myself rotting in the sun on the beach with what's left of the Sunday afternoon tourists. I tried to take a nap in the lull of elephantine stomps and crashes only to find they set up a ladder right outside of my bedroom window. Who can sleep with the glass rattling? I can't help but feel that one of them may fall through the ceiling at some point. And the phone keeps ringing! Who is calling! - TODAY?! The Human bounded out of his bed like nothing was at all wrong in the...
